Torreon youth held in shooting
A 17-year-old Torreon, N.M., youth is being held in connection with a shooting that occurred about 11:45 p.m. on April 19.
Since the suspect is a juvenile, police are withholding the name.
The incident was first reported to tribal police in Crownpoint by Metro Dispatch in Gallup.
Metro Dispatch said that Cisco Whitehorse, 26, of Torreon had been shot and the suspect had fled the scene.
When tribal police arrived on the scene, they found out that Whitehorse and the juvenile had been drinking about a mile from Whitehorse's house when they got into a dispute and battered each other.
Whitehorse went back to his house but the juvenile followed and the fighting continued until the juvenile got a .22 caliber rifle and shot at Whitehorse three times, striking him once in the leg above the right knee.
The fighting continued and the juvenile then, according to police, armed himself with a 5-foot long metal post and struck Whitehorse several times.
Family members finally stopped the fight.
Police said Whitehorse was transported to Albuquerque for treatment. The juvenile was apprehended several hours and charged with aggravated battery, unlawful use of a deadly weapon and a curfew violation.
