While fireworks tents have popped up in border towns for the July 4th weekend, the June 12 fire restrictions and June 16 declaration of emergency ordered by President Ben Shelly remain in effect.

This is what Marty Benally and Charlena James, of Ganado, Ariz., didn't know until they were briefly educated about the fire restrictions and emergency fire declaration that were issued in response to the Assayii Lake Fire. The 14,712-acre blaze is considered the largest wildfire in Navajo history.

The couple was out acquiring fireworks to celebrate Independence Day Monday at one of the local fireworks stands owned by Brandy Sanchez in Tse Bonito, N.M.

"We're thinking safety," Benally said. "We're going to have a controlled area."
