The Navajo Times is proud to announce the 2008 Spring Sports All-Area All-Stars for the sports of baseball and softball. The selections are based on nominations submitted by coaches and athletic directors.
These student-athletes represent the best from schools throughout the region. The Navajo Times applauds them for their accomplishments and the pride they bring to their schools and communities.
Baseball Player of the Year: Kirk Ramsey of Winslow.
Ramsey is a senior who played outfield and pitcher for the Winslow Bulldogs. Ramsey was selected to the All-State first team by the Arizona Coaches Association, named the 3A North offensive player of the year, and is a member of the 3A Arizona BCA All-Star team.
Ramsey had a batting average of .495 with 49 runs scored, 50 hits, 20 RBIs and an outstanding fielding performance with a .961 fielding percentage with only two errors.
Baseball Coach of the Year: Art Griffith of Winslow.
Griffith led Winslow to the 3A North regional championship and reached the semifinals of the Arizona 3A state baseball tournament in Surprise.
Griffith coached Winslow players Kirk Ramsey, Efran Todacheenie and Anthony Huerta, all of whom were named to the 3A North All-Region team and 3A All-State team. Winslow finished the season with a 24-9 record.
Softball Player of the Year: Latainna Eltsosie of Cibola High in Albuquerque.
Eltsosie is a three-year starter for Cibola and played shortstop and third base. She also is a top-notch pitcher. She was named to the All-District (1-5A) and Class 5A All-State teams. She led Cibola to a second consecutive state 5A team title. Cibola finished with a 30-1 record.
Softball Coach of the Year: Becky Barris of Winslow.
In her seven years at Winslow, Barris has won the 3A North Region and 3A North Region tournament titles each year, making seven consecutive state softball tournament appearances. Winslow has won 48 straight conference games in 3A North.
She was named the 2008 3A North coach of the year and led the school to a 32-4 season record - the most wins in school history. In her seven-year career at Winslow, she has a 184-45-5 record.
