Stars will shine at Navajo Times fall sports award ceremony

 

The Navajo Times will host the 2008 All-Area All-Star Fall Sports Awards Ceremony on Monday, Dec. 8, at the Red Rock Park Convention Center in Church Rock, N.M.

This year's guest speaker is Felicia Guliford, a teacher and coach at the new Miyamura High School in Gallup, N.M.

After a much-heralded athletic career at Gallup High, Guilford received a full-ride scholarship to run cross country and track at the University of Tennessee.

While competing at Tennessee, Guliford battled injuries throughout her four years as a member of the Lady Volunteers track and cross-country teams. She was named All-America and helped Tennessee capture the national title in track and field.

This past May, Guliford graduated with a bachelor's degree and she has since returned to the local area to share what she has learned and experienced through teaching and coaching.

The awards ceremony will honor the accomplishments of local high school coaches and student-athletes in the fall sports of cross country, volleyball, soccer and football.

The ceremony will start at 10 a.m. with a photo session for all of the coaches and student-athletes that have been selected. All athletes are urged to wear their colorful team jerseys for the photo session. These photos will be published in the Dec. 11 issue of the Navajo Times.

After the photo session, lunch will be served at 11 a.m. and the awards ceremony will start at 12 noon.

All selected coaches and student-athletes will be notified no later than Thursday, Dec. 4, as a complete list of all the selected student-athletes and coaches will be published in the Dec. 4th issue of Navajo Times and on the Navajo Times Web site: navajotimes.com.
