Beyale, Murphy named golfers of the year

State champions fill the 2009 Navajo Times spring sports All-Area All-Stars teams.
Area high school athletes were selected and nominated by coaches for the track and field and golf teams.
This week, the All-Area All-Stars for golf are featured. Next week the track and field teams will be announced, followed by softball and baseball.
The Navajo Times female golfer of the year is Faylyn Beyale, a senior from Kirtland Central.
Beyale captured her second consecutive New Mexico Class 4A state golf championship after a thrilling finish at the state tournament.
Beyale won a three-hole playoff against Karissa Beck of Artesia. In the playoff, Beyale won by one stroke.
Beyale also won her second straight District 1-4A golf title. Beyale and her teammates finished third at state.
The Navajo Times male golfer of the year is Dylan Murphy, a junior from Farmington High.
Murphy led Farmington in scoring and finished fifth overall at the state golf tournament.
Murphy finished with a 161 score at the state tournament, 13 shots behind state champion Simon Miller of Albuquerque Academy and three shots behind the second-place finisher.
Murphy is also the District 1-4A champion. Murphy helped the team to a fourth place finish in Class 4A.
The Navajo Times golf coach of the year is Duane Toledo of Farmington.
Toledo coached the Farmington boys' golf team to a fourth-place finish in the Class 4A state tournament. Farmington finished with 653 points. Albuquerque Academy won the state title with a 602 score.
